UNRAVEL – FINAL DAWN 7″

UNRAVEL are a blackened deathmetal/thrash/hardcore band from Perth, Australia.

I discovered these guys tonight and I think I’ve listened to NEMESIS about 40 times because the breakdown is beyond juice. Yep. Thats how good it is. I can’t even make sense anymore.

PINCHGUT

PINCHGUT are a political hardcore punk band from Hobart, Tasmania.

During my first listen to this band I stopped the record and started again, I had to read the lyrics while it played. This is one of the realest things I have listened to in a long time. I encourage you to do what I did and see what this band has to say. It’s confronting and not easy to listen to, but you can hear the passion and honesty in the singers voice, and the messages in every song are important.

Bands like PINCHGUT are important.

MELCHIOR – S/T CASSETTE

Melchior are a dark hardcore band from Adelaide, Australia.

Somehow it took me until 2:30am on a Monday night to finally check this band out. I was aware of them, had heard good things, and their tape came out on LETHAL DOSE so I presumed it would be good. Foolishly I slept on it and only now am I realising how bad I fucked up.

The thing that struck me immediately about Melchior is how real they sound. The desperation and anger in their music is impossible to ignore. Theres something in the vocals that leaves no doubt in my mind that the singer genuinely means and believes every single word on this record, and the lyrics match the music perfectly. I still haven’t decided on a favourite song, but the lyrics to BREAKING A PATTERN fucked me up when I read them:

i’m standing / under boiling water / so i can burn / your fucking fingerprints / off of my skin / my body is raw / my body is blistered / and what is your excuse? / your childhood / was different to mine? / you had it harder? // so you get to treat me badly? / that isn’t how / life fucking works / you don’t get to beat me down / and then tell me to stop / being so hard on myself / while your voice is bludgeoning / my head / against these walls / stop telling me / i’m not good enough / for anyone else // i would love to / destroy / the idea of you // i hope you / will suffer / the way / i have suffered

This band is important, I’m looking forward to seeing what they release next.

USELESS CHILDREN – POST ENDING // PRE COMPLETION

Useless Children are/were (I’m unsure of their current status) a 3 piece band from Melbourne, Australia.

I remember the first time I saw this band super vividly. They were playing after a bunch of powerviolence/d-beat bands, I watched them setting up, their guitarist had a light blue Stratocaster and like 200 pedals, I remember thinking “the fuck is going on here” as he warmed up with a super bright clean tone (naturally said pedals did a lot to change this once they started). They didn’t really sound check, they just plugged all their shit in, drummer did a 4 count and they fucking destroyed me. POST ENDING // PRE COMPLETION has pretty much lived in my record player since it came out, I’m not going to pigeon hole this band by likening them to any others, just listen to the fucking record. It’s easily one of the best releases to come out of Australia, ever.

Also, their back catalogue is well worth checking out too and available from their bandcamp

DEADWEIGHT – OLD BONES

Deadweight are a metallic hardcore band from Melbourne, Australia.

Old bones is a heavy, chaotic two track record that I just listened to in its entirety three times and it became immediately clear that I needed to share it. While a few elements of their sound do remind me of other bands, I feel that Deadweight have an interesting brand of instrumentation that is truly their own. This is complimented by an overall feeling of desperation that I am a huge fan of, articulated both by their music and their lyrics:

Iron Wing:

Shackled tongue clamped to a bone,
A life mission holding me down,
an endemic vision, a malignant growth of change,

A burden and a gift
My curse of clarity
Sick with empathy

Chains of guilt cut through flesh,
Scabs of hope picked and bled,
Scars align.. Sickness, stronger than iron

Blood of vermin crawling through my skin,
The parasite in my wings, the scavenger of hope

Rise dear plague of flight,
be my dream and infect all.

Deadweight’s 2014 demo was also great and worth downloading, if these two records are an indication of where this band is going then I highly recommend you pay attention.

IDYLLS – PRAYER FOR TERRENE

Idylls are from Brisbane, Australia and may well be the best band in the country at the moment. The genre of music they play is probably prefixed with the word “post” but I’m not going to bother trying to pick it. Prayer For Terrene is an intense, aggressive onslaught that you need to hear to understand. Just listen to the fucking record.

PS: No way am I finding a download link for this, support this band.

SOLIS – DEMO

Solis are a metallic hardcore band from Melbourne, Australia. I’ve seen this band play a couple of times and have been hanging out for a record. This demo is heavy, intense and a good indication that you should keep your eye on this band. Dead Air is my jam both musically and lyrically:

Concrete filled lungs
Ash stained wrought flesh

Nothing tangible
just roaring blood
Static, white noise

Increasingly
isolated
Increasingly withdrawn
I can’t connect

The empty, swelling resonance of dead air

I’m stagnant
dejected
Lethargic
Distraught

The empty, swelling resonance
The empty, swelling resonance, dead air

With concrete filled lungs
And ash stained wrought flesh

I need to limit the damage
I need to keep this contained
I need to disconnect
Retreat, fade out

Concrete filled lungs
Ash stained wrought flesh

Solid first record, looking forward to hearing more from these guys.
