ASH MOUTH are a crushing grind/d-beat/powerviolence band from Melbourne, Australia.
Man I don’t even know how to sum up this record. Normally when I listen to a grind band’s first release its unintelligible nonsense, I went into listening to this not expecting much (for no good reason) and had my head fucking blown off. There’s no filler, all the riffs are memorable and intense. There’s word that these dudes are going to drop another release soon, stay fucking tuned.

Crawler is a sludge/powerviolence band from Auckland, New Zealand who were active from between about 2009 to 2013. The band had two bassists and the records sound surprisingly coherent for how distorted their tones are. Also the difference between the two tapes is great, the band evolved from aggressive powerviolence into something that at times almost resembles noise rock. They pull off a great butthole surfers cover, which was not something I would have ever expected when I recorded their first tape (I shouldn’t really take that much credit for this, I recorded it with Angus Jones who ended up mixing it, dude is a lord, check out his grind/dbeat band TREPANATION) The B side of their first tape is a 15 minute noise track entitled A man’s struggle with his own homosexuality that I’m pretty sure is made up of samples from one of the early flight simulator games.
Anyway, I still have a couple the Crawler I tapes kicking around that I’ll mail for free to anyone who wants them. Share LOW PLACES and email me your details (along with any bands you think I’ll be interested in) to email@example.com and they’re yours.

Nervous Mothers are a grindy hardcore band from Antwerpen, Belgium. Listening to their music I hear a myriad of influences and that’s what I like about euro bands, typically they wont just pick a lane and regurgitate shit that’s been done before. This record is heavy, intense but most importantly interesting. My favourite track is Plague because of those crushing sludge riffs.
At this point the 7″ isn’t available because of a fuck up at the pressing plant, I will update this post once it is, in the meantime hassle the band to make this available to buy digitally!

Caged Grave are a powerviolence band from Melbourne, Australia. The record above is their demo and the reason I’m posting it (aside from it being great) is that it’s the first thing I heard before meeting/becoming friends with them, and so my opinion of it isn’t clouded by “friend ears”. This demo stood out to me for a number of reasons, the main one being that the fast riffs seem to have more coherency than a lot of the fastcore/PV I had been listening to at the time, and they are met with precise but frantic feeling drums. The effect of this is that it doesn’t feel like this record has any filler, there’s no sloppy guitar hidden behind layers of noise and fast drumming, the songs are short, to the point and heavy as fuck. Musically my favourite track from the demo is DARK, lyrically I like MORE TO LIFE because it’s to the fucking point:
I can’t stomach this
I need to escape
More to life than this
Always Moving on
Since the demo CG have done a bunch of releases and they all kill. Do yourself a favour and have a look at their bandcamp below, in the meantime I’ll leave you with these:

I know that basically every heavy music blog in existence has posted this record but fuck you, I am too.
Water Torture originate from Buffalo, NY and play super heavy powerviolence with noise/grind/sludge elements thrown into the mix for good measure. I saw them live, was blown away, and immediately brought this record which has been on heavy rotation ever since. I’m not going to say anything else about this band, listen to the album and make up your own damn mind about it.

No faith are connected to so many good bands that I’m not going to waste my time listing them. Based in Amherst, Massachusetts (which may give some clues to aforementioned connections) this band plays furious, noisy powerviolence and with each record just go from strength to strength. Their latest release “DEAD WEIGHT” is no exception, and while the first track may lull you into thinking this is a noise record WE SHALL ROT will fix that misconception very quickly.

DEMONBROTHER is a 2 piece studio collaboration between Will Killingsworth (Ampere, Vaccine, Orchid, No Faith, Ritual Mess etc etc) and Andrew Jackmauh (Boston Strangler, Cut the shit, Failures etc) that resulted in what is easily one of my favourite releases of 2014. This record sounds like someone took powerviolence and surgically removed all the incoherent blast riffs, leaving you with all the crushing heaviness you need to get through your monotonous bullshit life. It’s noisy, angry and slow, but not as sludgy as you would expect. Musically my favourite track would be BRUXISM, lyrically I have no idea at this point but I’ll update this section once my LP arrives.
